Howdy, I just joined this site a couple of days ago. I was diagnosed (sorta) in March, but was by a doc who said it was no big deal. I finally found another doc and he decided it was definitely a big deal after getting the MRI and I had surgery 16 days ago.

Curly, I know you posted a long time ago, but I actually am in the Austin area as well and had an amazing NS. I went to Dr. Glenn Harper at Seton Williamson. He knew what he was doing, he stays up with the research as much as possible and was willing to answer as many questions as I had....he is awesome. If you still haven't found someone in the area, give him a try, I think you will be pleased.

Hi Texans! I am a former member of this group and lost my account and started over recently. I am in the FTW area and trying to fast track getting some help and asap surgery without insurance. My symptoms gradually got worse and worse then a recent car accident has basically ruined my hopes for having a "good day" anymore. I am trying to find the most knowledgeable NS I can within several hours of FTW.

I see this Texas group is slow but if anyone see's this and wants to chat or has a recommendation for me please feel free to inbox me or reply here. Hope everyone is doing well!

Howdy! I've been a lurker for a while. I live in The Woodlands, Texas and was diagnosed with Chiari I (with 8mm herniation) a year ago. Luckily (if I may say so) my only symptoms have been the headaches. I've been in control with a Neurologist who is helping me manage the pain. I was doing pretty good until last month I had a flare up, which pretty much lasted about 4 weeks :(

Whenever I am stressed out or extremely tired my headaches get worst. My mom will say take it easy, relax, take a day off..... It is not that easy. Both my husband and I work, we have 2 kids, they both have afterschool activities. So we are always running everywhere.

Hi y'all! I was recently diagnosed with Chiari I malformation of 5mm.  I'm waiting to see the neurosurgeon next month.  I live in Houston and am so thankful to have found this website and the Texas group!

Curly, I don't know about Austin but I had surgery in Houston with Dr. Dong Kim and he was wonderful! Spent a ton of time with us in appointments before surgery to make sure we were comfortable with the plan and he was right there when I woke up in recovery, and when I woke up again in the ICU and he visited me in my room before I was discharged and he conducted my entire post op appointment. It was a rarity to have a surgeon who didn't just pass you off to one of his resisdents. If you can't find a specialist in Austin and need to travel, I'd recommend Dr. Kim. It also doesn't hurt that he was the neurosurgeon that operated on the Congresswoman who was shot in Arizona. He is a first class surgeon and a first class human being!

I was just diagnosed with Chiari 1 and a Pseudotumor Cerebri on 12/3/13. I am still waiting for my first NS and Neurologist appts, which will happen in the next couple of weeks. However, I am trying to find a Neurologist and NS in Austin that have experience with these disorders. Does anyone have any suggestions for Dr's in Austin, TX? If not, I am completely open to traveling to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio. Basically, I just want to make sure I'm able to get the best help possible.

I live in the DFW area. I just had surgery on November 4, and I am currently still in the hospital.

I notice all of you are discussing your surgeries. I havent had insurance for the past three years to even get my periodic scans. In 08/09 I had my last appt and I was at 7mm. I have had a lot of symptoms that are more aggravating then debilitating, but they are starting to get more severe. I have a LOT of stress and anxiety and I would think that is why I am having more symptoms.Which makes me more stressed because I dont feel well and dont know for sure if its Chiari or something else. When I lay down, my chest all the way to my lower abdomen hurts along with my back and neck. Could this be a symptom of Chiari? I live in Ft worth area.

Hello Fellow Texans,

I just wanted to say that I had surgery with Dr. Parrish at the Houston Medical Center, he is wonderful.  My surgery was September 27th, no complications.  I feel great and have been walking a lot, my neck is still not able to turn as much as I would like so I have not really been driving but a few blocks.  Not ready for crazy Houston traffic yet, ha ha. I plan on going back to work by the end of month.

I would not hesitate to say I feel it was well worth it, I feel fortunate to have gotten through without complications, but I feel that Dr. Parrish is very experienced and wanted to let others know about him.

The best to all in the group!
